With porous defense, Florida makes Donovan a road worrier

The Florida Gators have played four games on the road this season.

Same result each time.

?I'm not worried about that,? Florida coach Billy Donovan told reporters after the Gators fell at Tennessee, 67-56. ?Playing on the road is, for me, a mentality you've got to have. We've been a pretty good road team.?

The Gators lost in the first month of the season at Ohio State and at Syracuse, which are two of the nation?s best teams. They lost nine days ago at Rutgers and now Tennessee, which are not.

Against the Volunteers, Florida couldn?t manage to shoot even 36 percent from the field, turned over the ball 15 times and scored 29 points under its average.

And, of course, their coach was angriest about how the Gators defended.

?I'm more disappointed with our defense than anything else in the game,? Donovan said. ?Both teams played hard, but the difference was the defense. At one point, we were giving up 55 percent in the second half ? that was the issue.

"Because even with 15 turnovers, which really is not a lot on the road, if we defend a little bit better ? I'm not saying we win the game, but at least we're probably a little bit more in the game and we needed to be.?

The Gators played without injured guard Mike Rosario, who was averaging nine points and shooting well from the field (46 percent) and 3-point range (40.7).

He was bothered by a back injury earlier in the season and now is down with an ankle problem. That has meant more minutes for sophomore Scottie Wilbekin, who is not an offensive threat at this point in his career.

"I still think our guys have a long way to go in terms of what they need to learn and how they need to grow,? Donovan said. ?And these experiences, hopefully, will help us.?
