Massive storm system in South tosses cars, leaves one fatality in Georgia

A storm system spawned tornadoes, closed I-75 in northern Georgia, and killed two people, one in Georgia and one in Tennessee.

In this image made from video and released by WSB TV in Atlanta, a tornado moves through the town of Adairsville, Ga. on Wednesday, Jan 30, 2013. A fire chief says a storm that roared across northwest Georgia has left overturned vehicles on Interstate 75 northwest of Atlanta, and crews are responding to reports of people trapped in storm-damaged residential and commercial buildings.

In northwest Georgia, the storm system tossed vehicles on Interstate 75 onto their roofs. The highway was closed for a time, and another main thoroughfare remained closed until crews could safely remove downed trees and power lines from the road.

WSB-TV in Atlanta aired footage showing an enormous funnel cloud bearing down on Adairsville, about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta, as the storm ripped through the city's downtown area. The system flattened homes and wiped out parts of a large manufacturing plant. Pieces of insulation hung from trees and power poles, while the local bank was missing a big chunk of its roof.

One person was killed and nine were hospitalized for minor injuries, state emergency management officials said. Residents said no traces remained of some roadside produce stands ? a common sight on rural Georgia's back roads.

One other death was reported in Tennessee after an uprooted tree fell onto a storage shed where a man had taken shelter.

In Adairsville, the strange mix of debris in one yard showed just how dangerous the storm had been: a bathtub, table, rolls of toilet paper and lumber lay in the grass next to what appears to be a roof. Sheets of metal dangled from a large tree like ornaments.

"The sky was swirling," said Theresa Chitwood, who owns the Adairsville Travel Plaza. She said she went outside to move her car because she thought it was going to hail. Instead, the passing storm decimated a building behind the travel plaza.

"It sounded like a freight train coming through," she said. "It looks like a bomb hit it."

Adairsville is a small town in the Oothcalooga Valley, with a historic district lined with trees and a mix of pre-Civil War and Victorian homes. It proclaims itself the first Georgia town to be listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places and looks to draw tourists with its antique shops.

Powerful winds ripped through the entire region, with gusts powerful enough to topple tractor-trailers in several places.

In Adairsville, several were flipped on their side in the parking lot of a gas station and restaurant. Danny Odum, a trucker from Marion, Ill., had stopped for breakfast when the suspected tornado hit. After it passed, Odum said he went outside to find his truck that was hauling diapers on its side with his dog Simon, a Boston terrier, still inside. Simon was scared but otherwise fine.

Bartow County fire chief Craig Millsap said there were reports that two storm warning sirens may have failed, but he said the failed sirens were not in the hardest-hit area.

Access to the area was being restricted, and there was a report of a gas leak in the area, officials said. A shelter was being established at a community recreation center ? temperatures were expected to plummet to the 30s and 40s overnight.

Conditions remained ripe for tornadoes into Wednesday afternoon, and authorities were still investigating several sites to determine if damage was caused by twisters. Since Tuesday, the system had caused damage across a swath from Missouri to Georgia.

Nudists lose bid to block San Francisco ban on baring all

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nudists in famously tolerant San Francisco lost a bid on Tuesday to block a city ban on nakedness in public places, when a federal judge threw out a legal challenge that argued public nudity was akin to political expression.

San Francisco city leaders last month approved the ban on baring it all in streets, public plazas and the transit system to curtail public nudity, which some residents and business owners complained had gotten out of control.

The efforts to clamp down have caused a flap in the city, where men in particular are known to parade naked through the streets of the predominantly gay Castro District.

Some residents say nudists, and specifically a group known as the Naked Guys, have gone too far with their constant presence at a square in the Castro District. But nudists claim they have a right go naked in public and say politicians in San Francisco, which has often celebrated the bizarre and unconventional, should leave them alone.

Four nudist activists sued in November, even before the measure barring public nudity was passed by a slim majority of the Board of Supervisors, saying it would violate their constitutional right to free expression.

However, U.S. District Judge Edward Chen concluded that "nudity in and of itself is not inherently expressive," and denied the nudists' request for an injunction blocking the measure, which is due to go into effect on Friday.

Violators face fines of up to $100 for a first offense and $200 for a second. A third violation can bring a year in jail and a $500 penalty.

"Unlike the burning of a flag, burning of a draft card, or wearing a black armband in protest against the war, public nudity in and of itself is not commonly associated with expression of a particular message," Chen wrote in his decision.

He also noted that the law allows nudity on beaches and during certain events that require city permits, such as the gay pride parade.

The attorney for the nudists, Christina DiEdoardo, said they were still determining their next step. But she said nudists could mount a renewed challenge once the ordinance goes into effect if they are arrested while protesting the law, since they could then explicitly link their nudity to political expression.

"The judge seemed to issue an open invitation to file an amended complaint," she said.

A demonstration is scheduled for Friday outside San Franciso' City Hall.

Private firms reportedly near deal for Hostess Twinkies

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Private equity firms Apollo Global Management LLC and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co are near a deal to buy snack cake brands including Hostess Twinkies and Donettes, two sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

A deal for roughly $400 million, part of Hostess Brands Inc's bankruptcy process, could be announced as soon as Tuesday, said one of the sources, who declined to be identified as the discussions are not public.

The so-called stalking horse bid by the private equity firms would serve as the baseline offer for the business, which also includes Dolly Madison bread and Hostess cupcakes. It could still be topped by others at an auction.

Dean Metropoulos, No. 360 on the Forbes 400 list of America's wealthiest people, is a packaged foods veteran who was once the joint owner of brands such as Duncan Hines baking mixes, Vlasic pickles and Swanson frozen dinners. In 2010, his firm bought Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, the no-frills brew popular with young East Coast hipsters.

His son Daren, a principal at the firm, confirmed earlier this month that they were working on a bid. Neither Daren, nor a spokesman for Apollo were immediately available to comment on Tuesday. Hostess declined to comment.

Apollo, founded by banker Leon Black, has invested in consumer companies before, including in CKE Restaurants and Claire's Stores Inc.

Hostess was granted permission by a U.S. bankruptcy court judge in November to wind down its business and liquidate its assets after a strike by a baker's union crippled the 82-year-old company's operations.

The sale of assets, which range from Twinkies and Wonder bread to real estate and baking equipment, is being run by Perella Weinberg Partners. The lead banker on the sale, Joshua Scherer, has said there was great interest from many parties in the assets.

Earlier this month, Hostess chose a $390 million offer by Flowers Foods , maker of Tastykake products, as the stalking horse bid for several brands including Wonder bread.

On Monday, Hostess said it chose McKee Foods Corp, maker of Little Debbie snack cakes, as the initial bidder for its Drake's cakes, which include Ring Dings, Yodels and Devil Dogs. It also chose United States Bakery as the lead bidder for four of its smaller bread brands plus bakeries, equipment and depots.

Hostess also filed a motion on Monday to stop paying retiree benefits to its former employees, saying that its lenders only agreed to fund the benefits through February 2013 due to a delay in the appointment of a retiree committee.

New BlackBerrys coming to UK, Canada in next week

NEW YORK (AP) -- A new generation of more versatile BlackBerry smartphones is finally about to hit the market after excruciating delays allowed mobile devices made by Apple, Samsung and others to build commanding leads in a market that is redefining society.

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. formally unveiled its long-awaited line-up of revamped smartphones and software Wednesday at simultaneous events held in New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Dubai, Johannesburg, Jakarta and Delhi.

In a move underscoring the stakes riding on its make-or-break product line-up, the Canadian company used the occasion to announce it is changing its name to BlackBerry - a pioneering brand that has lost its cachet since Apple's 2007 release of the iPhone reset expectations for what a smartphone should do.

The first devices in the new crop of BlackBerrys will be called the Q10, which will feature a physical keyboard like previous versions of the phone, and the Z10 will have only touch-screen keyboard, like Apple Inc.'s trend-setting iPhone and other handsets running on Google Inc.'s Android software, including Samsung's popular Galaxy. They will run on a redesigned operating system called BlackBerry 10, which the company began working on after buying QNX Software Systems in 2010.

The new software and BlackBerrys were supposed to be released a year ago, only to be delayed while Apple and Android device makers won more zealous converts to their products. In the meantime, Microsoft Corp. also rolled out a new Windows operating system for smartphones, confronting RIM with another technology powerhouse to battle.

The delays in developing the new BlackBerrys helped wipe out $70 billion in shareholder wealth and 5,000 jobs.

"It is the most challenging year of my career," said RIM CEO Thorsten Heins, whose anniversary leading the company occurred last week. "It is also the most exhilarating and exciting one."

The wait for U.S. smartphone users interested in buying the new BlackBerry line still isn't over. The Z10 won't be released in the U.S. until March and the Q10 might not arrive in the country until April, Heins said, to give wireless carriers more time to test the product. All the major U.S. carriers plan to sell the new BlackBerrys. The estimated U.S. prices for the phones weren't announced, though.

The Z10, which BlackBerry will call the "Zed-10" outside the U.S., will go on sale Thursday in United Kingdom Thursday. The same model will be released in Canada on Feb. 5 and will cost about $150 there with a three-year wireless contract.

Despite their limited availability until March, the new BlackBerrys will be hailed in a commercial Sunday during CBS's telecast of the Super Bowl. RIM hasn't disclosed how much that will cost, but some 30-second spots during the game have been sold for as much as $4 million.

BGC Financial analyst Colin Gills said the new phones' tardy arrival to the U.S. threatens to cause even more BlackBerry users to defect to the iPhone or an Android device. By the time, the Z10 goes on sale in the U.S. Gillis suspects many geeks will be waiting to see what Google plans to unveil in Mid-May at an annual conference that usually includes new gadgets.

Wednesday's event didn't go over well on Wall Street. RIM's stock shed 93 cents, or nearly 6 percent, to $14.73 in afternoon trading. The shares have still more than doubled from their nine-year low of $6.22 reached in September, but are still nearly 90 percent below their peak of $147 reached in 2008 when the iPhone was still a novelty trying to break into the mainstream.

Repeated delays and years of blundering have turned the once-iconic BlackBerry into an also ran as the iPhone and Android devices raced ahead with crowd-pleasing innovations. That has led some analysts to question whether the company that helped create the smartphone market will survive, especially as its losses have mounted in the past year.

Yet there was renewed optimism heading into Wednesday's event. Previews of the BlackBerry 10 software have gotten favorable reviews on blogs. Financial analysts are starting to see some room for a comeback. RIM redesigned the system to embrace the multimedia, apps and touch-screen experience prevalent today. The Q10 is meant to cater to people who still prefer a typing on a physical keyboard instead of a display screen.

Besides promising a better typing experience, the new BlackBerrys are supposed to run faster, pull up multiple applications simultaneously and enable users to separate their professional and personal lives with a feature called "Balance."

"Gone are the days of going back and forth and in and out between applications," said Andrew MacLeod, RIM's managing director for Canada. "It's cumbersome, it's inefficient and it's slow."

Doubts remain about the ability of BlackBerry 10 to rescue RIM.

"We'll see if they can reclaim their glory. My sense is that it will be a phone that everyone says good things about but not as many people buy," Gillis said. He thinks the company will need to sell at least 5 million BlackBerrys each quarter to remain viable.

Ovum analyst Adam Leach thinks the new system will appeal to existing BlackBerry users, but that won't be enough to undercut the popularity of the iPhone and Android devices. He predicted that BlackBerry "will struggle to appeal to a wider audience, and in the long-term will become a niche player in the smartphone market."

Avi Greengart of Current Analysis said RIM will need a persuasive marketing campaign to lure back former BlackBerry fans who have switched to iPhones or Android devices. "They need to convince consumers that their approach to mobile computing matches how a subset of people feel about themselves," Greengart said.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek called the redesigned BlackBerry a "great device" that could lead to a revival that many market observers didn't think was possible at RIM's low point last year.

"Six months ago we talked to developers and carriers, and everybody was just basically saying `We're just waiting for this to go bust,'" Misek said. "It was bad."

The BlackBerry has been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and crossed over to consumers. But when the iPhone came out, it proved phones can do much more than email and phone calls. Suddenly, the BlackBerry looked ancient. In the U.S., according to research firm IDC, shipments of BlackBerry phones plummeted from 46 percent of the market in 2008 to 2 percent in 2012.

Regardless of BlackBerry 10's advances, though, the new system will face a key shortcoming: It won't have as many apps written by outside companies and individuals as the iPhone and Android. RIM has said it plans to launch BlackBerry 10 with more than 70,000 apps, including those developed for RIM's PlayBook tablet, first released in 2011. Even so, that's just a tenth of what the iPhone and Android offer. Popular services such as Instagram and Netflix won't have apps on BlackBerry 10.

Report: Israel attacks target in Syria

JERUSALEM?(JTA) -- Israel reportedly attacked a target inside Syria.

The report of the attack on a site near the Syrian border with Lebanon came Wednesday afternoon, hours after reports came out of Lebanon that Israel had flown several sorties over its territory on Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.

Unnamed sources, including one identified as a Western diplomat, told Reuters that it was unknown what was hit inside Syria and where exactly the attack occurred.

The Israel Defense Forces would not comment on the report of an Israeli attack inside Syria.

News of an attack came days after Israel's Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom confirmed that Israel could launch a military strike on Syria if it appeared that Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas or Syrian rebels had taken possession of Syrian chemical weapons.

Shalom confirmed to Army Radio that Netanyahu met last week on Election Day with the country's security chiefs to discuss the situation in Syria.

The Lebanese army earlier this week accused Israel's Air Force of violating Lebanon's airspace several times on Jan. 26.

Wizards Top Bulls 86-73: Chicago's 3-Game Win Streak Comes To An End

WASHINGTON -- For the first 32 games of the season, the Washington Wizards were a sorry bunch ? winning only four times. The comical comparison was the Washington Generals ? the punching bag for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Not so much anymore.

Emeka Okafor had 15 points and 16 rebounds, helping the Wizards beat the Chicago Bulls 86-73 on Saturday night for their seventh victory in the last 10 games.

Nene scored 16 points and John Wall had 15 for Washington, which has won consecutive games for the second time this season. The Wizards have won five straight at home for the first time in five years.

"We are the team we thought we were supposed to be," Okafor said.

The run began before Wall returned from a left knee injury, and now the injury-riddled team is healthy again.

"We have back all the players. There is our team," Nene said. "We gonna shut up people's mouths. That's what we're going to do."

Chicago (26-17) had won a season-high three in a row for the third time.

Nate Robinson scored 19 points for the Bulls, and Joakim Noah narrowly missed a triple-double with nine points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists, which equaled his career high.

"I think we got beat by a team that just played harder than us tonight," Noah said.

"We played tired basketball tonight."

Chicago dominated Golden State at home on Friday night, leading throughout the game while Washington (11-31) easily beat undermanned Minnesota for its 10th victory of the season.

Two of the season's first five wins came against Miami and Oklahoma City, but in many ways, this was even more impressive.

"As a coach, I'll take it against a high school team," Washington coach Randy Wittman said.

Wittman, whose team was decimated by injuries early this season, pointed out that star point guard Derrick Rose has yet to play for the Bulls, and All-Star forward Luol Deng missed his fifth straight game with a strained right hamstring.

"I've been there, but a win's a win," Wittman said.

Wall, who started for the second straight night, has been the catalyst for the team's recent success.

"It's not just me, man. It's never just me. I wanted to come in and be a spark for the team," Wall said.

"I'm just doing a great job of getting easy shots for my teammates."

The Wizards outscored Chicago 23-11 in the third quarter to take a 73-55 lead. The 11 points were a season low for the Bulls. Chicago had twice as many turnovers (six) as field goals (three) in the period.

"I thought we played low energy tonight," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said.

"You gotta get ready for everybody. ... When you start taking shortcuts, the results aren't gonna be good."

The Wizards put together an 11-0 run late in the second quarter, holding the Bulls scoreless for nearly five minutes while building a 50-44 halftime lead.

Washington outscored Chicago 10-2 to start the third and led 60-46 with 8:58 to play. Nene hit two more field goals and two free throws as the Wizards extended the lead to 69-51 with 4:28 left in the third.

NOTES: The 29 points in the second half were a season low for the Bulls. ... Within a minute in the third quarter, Chicago F Carlos Boozer was charged with a flagrant foul for elbowing Okafor and a technical foul. ... The game was a sellout ? the third of the season for Washington. ... The Wizards trailed after the first quarter for the first time in their last eight home games.

Old-Fashioned Motherhood: From the Comments: Frustration in ...

Dear friends,

This morning, I checked my e-mail inbox to find that I had a new comment on an older post of mine called "The Incredible Shrinking Family". I could feel the pain of the writer so clearly in her words, and I wanted to reach out to her. Who of us have not been frustrated, tired, and just plain worn-out?

Here's what she wrote:

Hi! I came across your blog today and loved reading this post. I agree with everything you have to say ... in principle. But in practice I find this very difficult. I want to love children and love being a mother, but I just don't!
I have two darling little girls who I love, but I don't love being a mother. Pregnancy was miserable, the sleep deprivation of newborns was horrendous and the tantrums and potty training of toddlers has been torture! Like you say, it takes sacrifice, but I sometimes feel like it is just too much for me. I long for a life outside of my children, for some part of me to be left-over at the end of the day for my husband, for something besides diapers and disciplining and dishes!
So yes, children are important and families are vital and I believe in the LDS doctrine of the family ... but I just can't have more children. I feel it would be disastrous for me, for my marriage and for the children we already have. So I guess what I'm saying is that I totally get why some women do not want to have children or do not want to have a lot of children. I understand what they are feeling!
I would have never guessed that I would be saying this. As a young LDS teen, I yearned for a large family. But now, when reality has set in, I am just not enjoying it at all! I feel like overall I have a good attitude around my children and love them, do all of the good stay-at-home-mom things, but deep-down, I am miserable. Any advice?

I know that often people may think that my posts are so idealistic that I must never have bad days or frustrations, or a bad attitude. I'm sorry if this is a disappoinment, ladies, but I have had those days when I want to throw in the towel. I have moments where I hold my head in my hands and think "What have I done?!"

:-)

But those days don't last forever (Thank goodness!) and with the Lord's help we can do the difficult and succeed-- and have joy! (I promise!!!)

Here was my response to her, and to all moms who have those times and seasons where they feel they can't take another step, change another diaper, or wash one more dish:

I am so sorry that you are so overwhelmed and discouraged. Boy, have I been there! But there really is hope and peace on the horizon...

First of all, you are deep in the trenches of one of the hardest times of motherhood! I advise you take a deep breath and try to see into your future five, ten or fifteen years from now.

You will NOT always be sleep deprived and mired in the difficulties of trying to be and do everything on your own. Those little ones you have now WILL grow, they will learn to do more for themselves, and they will not always be so demanding.

The time you take now to patiently, lovingly train them will buy you more liberty and breathing room in your not-too-distant future. Is it hard? YES. But from experience, I can tell you, that when you work hard at training those first few little ones, then they become more helpful to you in your duties AND with any other little ones that may be in your future.

Toddler-hood really is the time that ALL moms want to throw in the towel and say "I'm not cut out for this!" You are FAR from being alone in those feelings, I promise!

It is okay to take a break and let your body and your heart heal for a time. But the secret to that and to surviving and moving forward in everything is to PRAY. HARD. Ask for a blessing from your husband, now and then. Pray for peace. For direction. For patience.?

Good grief, I even once had to start praying that I could LOVE my kids!!! LOL! The beauty and blessing was that MY PRAYERS WORKED.

Anything worth doing is difficult-- that's the test of this life. But you don't need to hold your breath as you try to make it through the difficult years. Come up to the surface and breathe deeply in the Father's love, mercy and help.

None of us can succeed at this alone. We need Christ, and He is willing and waiting to take those troubles and burdens from us if we will just give them to Him.

Please don't struggle alone when you don't have to! The Lord loves you and sees every sacrifice and tear and sleepless night.?

Don't worry about having another baby right now. Just work on your relationship with Christ. Then everything else will fall into place.

We can "do all things through Christ." But we should not run faster than we have strength. We NEED to take time to be healed by the Lord. He will give us all we need and then some, helping us to do all things "in wisdom and order."

I know the writer and I would love to hear any other advice from my readers. Do you have more to add?

With love to all my sisters in the motherhood trenches,

Trove of ancient skulls found in Mexico

Archaeologists have unearthed a trove of skulls in Mexico that may have once belonged to human sacrifice victims. The skulls, which date between A.D. 600 and 850, may also shatter existing notions about the ancient culture of the area.

The find, described in the January issue of the journal Latin American Antiquity, was located in an otherwise empty field that once held a vast lake, but was miles from the nearest major city of the day, said study co-author Christopher Morehart, an archaeologist at Georgia State University.

"It's absolutely remarkable to think about this little nothing on the landscape having potentially evidence of the largest mass human sacrifice in ancient Meso-America," Morehart said.

Middle of nowhere

Morehart and his colleagues were using satellite imagery to map ancient canals, irrigation channels and lakes that used to surround the kingdom of Teotihuacan (home to the Pyramid of the Sun), about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Mexico City. The vast ancient kingdom flourished from around A.D 200 to 650, though who built it remains a mystery. [In Photos: Amazing Ruins of the Ancient World]

In a now drained lake called Lake Xaltocan, around which was essentially rural farmland at the time, Morehart stumbled upon a site with evidence of looting.

When the team investigated, they discovered lines of human skulls with just one or two vertebra attached. To date, more than 150 skulls have been discovered there. The site also contained a shrine with incense burners, water-deity figurines and agricultural pottery, such as corncob depictions, suggesting a ritual purpose tied to local farming. [See images from the grisly excavation ]

Carbon dating suggested that the skulls were at least 1,100 years old, and the few dozen analyzed so far are mostly from men, Morehart told LiveScience. The researchers did not release photos of the skulls because the sacrifice victims may have historic ties to modern-day indigenous cultures.

The findings shake up existing notions of the culture of the day, because the site is not associated with Teotihuacan or other regional powers, said Destiny Crider, an archaeologist at Luther College in Iowa, who was not involved in the study.

Human sacrifice was practiced throughout the region, both at Teotihuacan and in the later Aztec Empire, but most of those rituals happened at great pyramids within cities and were tied to state powers.

By contrast, "this one is a big event in a little place," Crider said.

The shrines and the fact that sacrifice victims were mostly male suggest they were carefully chosen, not simply the result of indiscriminate slaughter of a whole village, Crider told LiveScience.

Many researchers believe that massive drought caused the fall of Teotihuacan and ushered in a period of warfare and political infighting as smaller regional powers sprang up, Morehart said.

Those tumultuous times could have spurred innovative ? and bloody ? practices, Crider said.

"Maybe they needed to intensify their activities because everything was changing," she said. "When things are uncertain you try new strategies."

Dressed to Kill...or to Be Really Organized | DIY and home ...

We have officially stepped up our organizational/storage game. Last weekend, we were traveling to Jersey City for a friend?s birthday and we couldn?t resist a ?quick? pit stop at good old IKEA in Elizabeth, NJ (the closest IKEA to us). As I mentioned in my last post, (which you can read here), we devised a plan for moving our dressers around + purchasing a new one to create more storage space. Here?s a quick re-cap:

We had 1 dresser in our office dedicated to a lot of Andrew?s clothes.
Office IKEA Malm Dresser

We had another dresser in our bedroom, which was for my clothes:
Bedroom IKEA Malm Dresser

The idea was to move the dresser in the bedroom, into the office, and place the 2 IKEA Malm dressers on one of the larger walls in our office, pictured here with the keyboard, pre-move:
Office wall

We purchased 1 new, 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser for the bedroom. So I have gained 1 drawer and Andrew has technically gained 3! Wall space in our bedroom is limited, so we figured if we can?t go out, go up! The 4-drawer IKEA Malm dresser was just the right height to fit right under our wall-mounted TV, so we didn?t have to move that at all (whew)! Here?s what the bedroom dresser setup looks like now:

IKEA Malm 4-Drawer Dresser

Is it me, or does the room somehow look bigger?? You probably can?t really tell from this picture, but for some reason, this dresser makes things feel a bit roomier. Maybe because it?s taller than the previous it?s drawing my eyes up, creating the illusion of more space? Or maybe I?m just lost in space, who knows?either way, I love it! My things are at a better level and, of course, I gained an extra drawer. Now I can stop over-stuffing drawers and lay my clothes neatly?at least until I go on another shopping spree.

As for the office, the new setup looks like this, ?music nook? and dressers on the inside wall, respectively:

Office music nookOffice with IKEA Malm dressers

This I really love! We have definitely lost some floor space in this scenario, but this just makes more sense to me. I think this wall was meant to have these dressers spanning the greater part of it. In addition to gaining 3 more drawers in this room, we have also gained some more surfaces. I can?t wait to spice this space up with a little more decor. We?ve got some great plans for the surface of the dressers, as well as the wall space above them. As of right now, we?re thinking of definitely adding a table runner across the width of the dressers. Then maybe some new framed artwork and some other decorative finds. For the wall, we?re definitely thinking of finding a cheap/old mirror to gussy up and eventually hang above, maybe with some other accents around?? We?re not quite sure yet, but we?re pretty excited about this new take on the office.

Stick with us as we make more DIY and design decisions in our Fresh Nest! Andrew?s got a great post coming up about a project he tackled recently. Militant groups clash in NW Pakistan, 24 killed

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? A Pakistani official says clashes between two Islamic militant groups over control of a prized valley near the Afghan border have killed 24 people.

Arshad Khan of the Khyber tribal region said Saturday that the clashes started Friday when the main militant group Tehrik-e-Taliban captured a base of another militant group, Ansarul Islam, in the Tirah valley. Ansarul Islam then tried to retake the base, with fighting continuing into the next day.

A military officer speaking on condition of anonymity said most of the dead were militants but some local tribesmen were also killed.

The remote and mountainous valley is valued by militant groups as a base. It's difficult for the Pakistani military to enter and allows militants easy access to Afghanistan and other tribal agencies.

BlackBerry Z10 priced at ?480 sim-free by purported Carphone Warehouse database leak (update)

BlackBerry Z10 purportedly hits Carphone Warehouse database, 480 unlocked

With all the BlackBerry 10 leaks as of late, it seems inevitable that pricing info would get ousted in the lead up to January 30th. Thanks to an anonymous tipster, it appears that the sim-free version of RIM's Z10 will cost UKers a cool £480 at Carphone Warehouse (for perspective, a 16GB iPhone 5 would run you just roughly £30 more). The leak comes from what's said to be a snapshot of the company's internal database, listing the white variant. The attached BLAZ10WHI model number also syncs up nicely with the previous slip from the retailer. At this rate, not much is going to be left to the imagination when RIM officially unveils its devices come Monday -- who likes surprises anyway, right?

Update: We've updated the post to reflect that the phone was touted to us as "sim-free," specifically.

Bats split on family living

Jan. 24, 2013 ? For the tiny Daubenton's bat, the attractions of family life seem to vary more with altitude than with the allure of the opposite sex.

For more than a decade, a team led by Professor John Altringham from the University of Leeds' School of Biology has studied a population of several hundred bats along a 50-km stretch of the River Wharfe. They monitored roosts in Ilkley and Addingham, upstream in the market town of Grassington and higher still in the villages of Kettlewell and Buckden.

The researchers found that all Daubenton's bats in nursery roosts in lowland areas of Wharfedale during the spring and summer were females and their offspring.

Male bats were mostly restricted to a windier, Heathcliff-like existence in roosts at the top of the Dales.

But the researchers were surprised to find a small oasis of cohabitation in Grassington, sandwiched between the bustle of the women-only childrearing in the lowlands and the more relaxed lives of the bachelors in the highlands.

Professor Altringham said: "Low down the dale, the females appear not to tolerate males and we assume they won't let them in the roost. They don't want anything to do with them. High in the dales, all the roosts are bachelor pads. But in the middle, at Grassington, males and females live together -- the social structure changes with the environment"

"One possible reason for not finding males low down the valley could be that the mothers just want to avoid competing with males for food. It takes a lot of insects to make the milk needed to feed their young," Professor Altringham said.

"But it is also possible that the males choose not to roost with the females. When you look at the nursery colony in Ilkley, mothers and pups often have a lot of ectoparasites like ticks and mites. In a warm, crowded nursery, parasites can thrive, especially if there's less time for good personal hygiene. Parasites not only make life uncomfortable but can affect a bat's health. The males that live by themselves are usually very clean in their bachelor pads, so you can understand why they might not want to move in," he added.

At Grassington, which is deep in the Yorkshire Dales National Park but not as high as Buckden and Kettlewell, the bats have a completely different social structure. Both male and female bats live with the young throughout the spring and summer in roosts in the stonework of the old Dales bridges and in holes in ash trees.

"Females may roost as high up the dale as Grassington because they have these warm, cuddly males to bunk up with. This way, females use less energy keeping warm and babies grow faster," Professor Altringham said.

"In these marginal conditions, they may just tolerate a few males to keep them warm. Otherwise they kick them out. Why do the males co-habit if they are going to get parasites all over them? Well, that may be down to the usual answer: sex."

Although male and female Daubenton's bats usually live apart throughout the spring and summer, they meet when they begin flying to caves in late summer.

Professor Altringham said: "In and around these caves the bats gather in huge numbers to mate, in a behaviour known as swarming. This is clubbing for bats, with males displaying to females in lengthy acrobatic chases. As winter closes in, these caves will ultimately be their hibernation sites.

"There are nearly 2,000 cave entrances and hundreds of kilometres of cave passages in the Dales and these attract bats from all over Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumbria and beyond for mating and hibernation. The males in Grassington may be giving themselves the opportunity to mate with the females late in the summer before they even get to the caves."

The researchers have built up a detailed picture of social and sexual behaviour by genotyping hundreds of individuals. The evidence gathered from this supports the theory that the Grassington males enjoy an advantage in mating.

"At Grassington, most of the fathers of bats born there spent the summer with the females. If we look at pups in Addingham and Ilkley, their dads were males caught when swarming at caves. So, as well as two different mating systems, you have distinct social groupings. A bachelor from Buckden is always a bachelor from Buckden. He doesn't pop down to Grassington to visit the females in the summer. His only option seems to be to go clubbing in the autumn," Professor Altringham said.

The Daubenton's bat, named after the 18th Century French naturalist Louis-Jean-Marie Daubenton, is widespread across the United Kingdom and specialises in hunting insects over water. Full-grown adults weigh only 7 to 12 grams, but they can live for 20 years or more.

"These bats are the size of a shrew but have a very different lifecycle. A shrew typically spends its entire life in a few metres of hedgerow, eats and breeds with a ferocious intensity, for a year if it is lucky, and then dies. In contrast, these bats lead a complex life over a huge area and females produce only one pup a year," Professor Altringham said. "This makes bats particularly vulnerable to the problems of habitat fragmentation and climate change."

California Intends to Declare BPA a Reproductive Health Hazard

Sacramento Capitol California today is announcing its intent to declare bisphenol A a reproductive hazard. Under a state law known as Proposition 65, items that contain a certain level of BPA would need warning signs for consumers. Pictured: California's Sacramento State Capitol Image: Flickr/Franco Folini

California today is announcing its intent to declare bisphenol A a reproductive hazard.

Under a state law known as Prop. 65, warning signs would be required for consumer items that contain a certain high level of BPA. BPA is used to make polycarbonate plastic, and also is found in liners of food and beverage cans and some thermal receipts.

Scientists say BPA is an estrogen-like substance that can alter reproductive hormones. California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment said it based its decision to list BPA as a Prop. 65 chemical on a 2008 report by the National Toxicology Program.

?"Bisphenol A meets the criteria for listing as known to the State to cause reproductive toxicity (developmental endpoint) under Proposition 65, based on findings of NTP [the National Toxicology Program]," according to the state agency.

"OEHHA is relying on the NTP?s conclusion in the report that there is clear evidence of adverse developmental effects in laboratory animals at 'high' levels of exposure," according to the state's decision.

The decision was based on laboratory tests by scientists that have shown effects on the body weight and reproductive development of the pups of pregnant rats and mice exposed to high levels of BPA.

The state agency is proposing to set an acceptable level of exposure that is considered fairly high, 290 micrograms per day. As a result, Sarah Janssen of the Natural Resources Defense Council wrote on her blog that the decision ?is not likely to trigger any warning labels on canned food or beverages.? The same is probably true for receipts and most other consumer products.

"However," she added, "a listing alone is quite significant and makes official what parents have known for years ? BPA is harmful and should be avoided."

Plastics and chemical manufacturers say the compound, which has been used in polycarbonate plastic for 50 years, is safe at levels people are exposed to

The intent of the law, passed by voters in 1986, is to require manufacturers to warn consumers whenever a chemical is used that has been linked to cancer or reproductive effects. In some cases, companies decide to avoid using the compound rather than put up warning signs in stores or other public places.

BPA already has been banned from baby bottles, and removed from most hard-shell water bottles. It also has been replaced with another chemical in most thermal receipts, although that chemical, known as BPS, also has been linked to estrogen-like effects.

The state agency will accept public comments for one month before making a final decision listing BPA.

Contrary to reports, the Irish haven't legalized drunk driving

Reports concerning an Irish county council's proposal to allow rural inhabitants to drive after drinking have been greatly exaggerated.

By Jason Walsh,?Correspondent / January 23, 2013

Reported around the globe as a license to drive drunk, an Irish council's motion to permit rural pub-goers to get behind the wheel not only lacks force of law, it's also a slightly odd solution to a serious issue.

It's not often that a vote by five county councilors in rural west Ireland makes headline news, but Danny Healy-Rae managed it this week when he and four colleagues passed a motion to allow drinkers to drive home ? albeit at a severely restricted speed and only on barely-used backroads.

The political response? The same as that of the Irish public: bafflement and embarrassment.

Leo Varadkar, minister for transport, said he disagreed with the council's motion and stressed the affect of the story spreading across the globe. "It doesn't really send out a good message internationally about Ireland," he said.

One fact that has barely been reported in the scramble to play-up rural Irish alcoholic clich?s: It's not going to happen. As a county council motion, the proposal has no legal status.

Irish people are keenly aware of the country's drink-sodden image, with many feeling Mr. Healy-Rae's motion plays to outdated prejudices about the country.

The move may not seem so out of the blue as it first sounds, though. Not quite, anyway.

Healy-Rae proposed the motion as a response to isolation in rural areas, particularly among the elderly and would help to counter "depression and suicide." He said permits could be issued allowing holders to have "two or three drinks" and then still drive home.

"They're traveling on very minor roads, often on tractors, with very little traffic and it's not right they're being treated the same as the rest of the traveling public and they have never killed anyone," he said.?"The only outlet they have then is to take home a bottle of whiskey," he says, "and they're falling into depression, and suicide for some of them is the sad way out."

To be sure, pubs in country areas of Ireland are at the center of community life and are more than just drinking dens, which is something even the motion's critics acknowledge. And going to the pub and drinking nonalcoholic drinks is already an option, as is the option of hiring a bus.

Healy-Rae is a member of a colorful County Kerry political dynasty known for rural populism ? and occasional support for strange causes including, most recently, removing the number 13 from vehicle license plates.

He is also a pub owner ? as are three more of the total five councilors who supported the idea. Three voted against the idea, seven abstained, and 12 were absent from the meeting.

Despite widespread criticism, the motion has attracted some support. Independent Galway councilor Michael Fahy says he will raise the idea at the next council meeting.

The chances of the government agreeing to the idea? Less than the amount of alcohol in a glass of tap water. The country has worked hard in recent decades to reduce road deaths, both by upgrading the road network and by stricter enforcement of the rules of the road.

Ireland's road death rate hit an all-time low in 2012, with 161 lives lost, 25 fewer than the previous year. It is has the sixth lowest road death rate the in EU.

Air Force calls number of sex assaults 'appalling'

(AP) ? The Air Force's top officer says the service recorded an "appalling" number of reports of sexual assault last year even as it worked to curb misconduct in the wake of a sex scandal at its training headquarters in Texas.

Gen. Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff, told the House Armed Services Committee Wednesday there were 796 reports of cases ranging from inappropriate touching to rape. The 2012 figure is a nearly 30 percent increase from 2011. The number could be much greater, Welsh said, because many cases are never reported at all.

Welsh said that "calling these numbers unacceptable does not do the victims justice. The truth is, these numbers are appalling!"

The Air Force has created a special unit to assist victims of sexual assault.

Why You Need Auto Insurance | The Art of Karma

The amount of cars and drivers on the road increases every year. As this number increases, the possibility of accidents also increases. If you get in a car crash, the auto insurance you own can make a large difference in what happens next. How can you decide what insurance you require and how to purchase it? Insurance requirements will differ by state/province, but usually include the following: Liability: It pays for the expenses you have caused to others in a car collision, including injury and property damage. Damages from bodily injury include medical fees, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property or loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Recommended, higher levels of insurance can be purchased that take care of more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal Injury Protection: This is mandated in some states and is optional in others. Sometimes referred to as no-fault coverage, this pays the medical treatment for you or your passengers regardless of who was at fault. It may also cover lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral costs. Local government usually sets minimum amounts. Medical Payments: Medical payment coverage is available in states that are not considered no-fault and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. All necessary medical or funeral expenses will be paid for under this insurance coverage. Collision: Damages resulting from a car accident will be paid for under this type of insurance. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than an accident, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured Motorist: Thousands of drivers are breaking the law by driving a car without owning the proper amount of car insurance. This insurance will protect you if one of these drivers hit you. Under-Insured Motorist: Similar to uninsured coverage, this type of insurance protects you against people driving without enough insurance protection. Other types of coverage, including car rental, are also available. What you pay for auto insurance varies by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The type of the car you own * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status * The place where you live Some drivers think they can get by without auto insurance, but it is truly something you don?t want to live without. Review your needs, research your options, and with the support of your insurance agent, choose the option that best suits you. Motorcycle Insurance Vancouver Wa

A Parent's Guide to Choosing the Perfect Pet - Dog Training Devices

A friend of mine recently confessed that he?d never had a pet as a child. My reaction was both one of surprise and pity. I looked at him like he had been deprived in some way and had been cruelly treated by his parents. How could he have gotten this far in life and become a fully rounded adult without the wonderful experience of a pet?! He has no understanding as to why I?m so attached to my dog and why I?ll happily take him out in all weathers and spend an enormous amount of money giving him everything that he needs. What I didn?t realise was that, my friend Pete wasn?t deprived, I was just lucky!

    Pet Academy

rabbitChildhood pets can teach a child a lot of things. Firstly, they teach responsibility. A child that has begged to have a rabbit could be allowed to keep one but on the proviso that they fed it, played with it and maybe even cleaned it out now and again.

Keeping pets also teaches children an important lesson on life and death. Invariably they will experience the loss of their pet at some point, which although distressing, will be an experience that they can cope with and understand through sensitive handling by their parents. This then prepares them for when death and loss occurs within human life.

Involving them in the health needs of their pet will teach them a little about science and medicine. For example, having them watch whilst you administer medicine such as Eliminall cat flea treatment will teach them a little about biology, even though it might be of the animal rather than human variety!

Tasks that are involved in caring for a pet can have health and general well-being benefits. Walking a dog or playing with it in the garden takes the child away from the television or computer and means that they get some exercise. They can also develop their motor skills and coordination by playing games such fetch.

Having considered the benefits of childhood pet ownership, the next step is to decide what kind is the most suitable for your family.

    Once I saw a Fishy?

Fish are a fairly low maintenance starter-pet. Impressive to look at and with fun accessories to add to their tanks, fish are a good way to introduce basic pet care to your child. As they take up very little room, are inexpensive and take little care other than feeding and cleaning out, this is an excellent first pet choice. Your child gets the fun of picking out their pet, naming and caring for it; however the responsibility level is fairly low for the family. You can even get fish food that will last in the tank for protracted periods of time so that you can go on holiday without having to arrange care.

    Night Fever

Again a fairly low maintenance pet, a hamster or gerbil has the added advantage of being cute and fluffy but your child can handle them and keep them out of the way in their own rooms. The only slight disadvantage is that hamsters are nocturnal and so may be sleeping during the day and may make noise at night.

    Raining Cats and Dogs

willow_catCats and dogs are probably the most popular of childhood pets; however they are slightly more high maintenance to care for. These are real family pets and should only be adopted if the whole family is keen on the idea. They need feeding at specific intervals, exercise, amusement and either letting in and out of the house or being taken for walks. They also need cleaning and having their health maintained. They can be expensive and you will be required to arrange a pet sitter or a visit to the cattery/kennels should you be going away overnight or longer. On the upside, the ownership of cats and dogs really teaches your child about care, responsibility and life. Your pet will become a real member of the family with a real personality and the all-important fluffy, cute factor. Ultimately a dog or cat becomes a special friend for your child.

Sally Dimmock?had a whole range of pets as a child and these days she writes a blog about her precious dog Sammy. She also writes pet?s health articles, advising on medical treatments such as worming tablets and?Eliminall cat flea treament.

Don't Get Hacked ? WordPress Security Tips to Keep Your Blog Safe ...

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine tried accessing her WordPress blog via her smartphone only to find that it mysteriously redirected her to a Russian website. When she tried accessing the site through her desktop web browser, however, it came up just fine. She called me to help figure out what was going on, so I dug into the code for the template she was using and discovered someone had exploited a WordPress security vulnerability. They added code that redirected mobile visitors to the foreign site.

It was a reasonably quick and easy hack to fix, and I immediately changed the passwords used to access both the WordPress site, as well as the server credentials used to upload code, but it left me feeling uneasy about the security of that WordPress install for a while.

So, when I saw that Dre Armeda from online security firm, Sucuri, was delivering a talk about WordPress security at the recent New Media Expo, I made sure I was in the front row, notebook in hand.

It turns out that keeping your WordPress installation secure ? whether your site is hosted on WordPress.com or installed locally through WordPress.org ? is not difficult, but you need to stay on top of it. There?s nothing inherently insecure about WordPress ? certainly no more than any other web application ? but following these tips, culled both from Armeda?s talk, as well as my own experience managing WordPress sites and other online systems, can reduce the chances that you?ll be unpleasantly surprised by a hack.

    • Change passwords frequently ? Armeda likens passwords to toothbrushes ? you should choose a good one, change it often and not share it with anyone. Changing your password monthly or quarterly is good practice for anything that requires a password. Select something that can?t be found in the dictionary and liberally pepper it with numbers and non-alphabetic symbols like #@$ or %. Armeda also recommends taking advantage of a password manger like LastPass, which can handle much of the heavy lifting of changing and maintaining multiple secure passwords for you.
    • Keep both WordPress and its plugins updated ? It seems that every time I log in to the admin console for WordPress, there?s another prompt to either update WordPress itself, or one of the plugins I?ve installed. It only takes a few minutes, but I?ve been tempted to put it off. Like me, you?ll need to fight this temptation. Try to log in as the admin user at least once a week to make sure everything is up-to-date. Often, these updates fix security vulnerabilities that could leave your site open to hackers. Since the code that runs WordPress and its plugins is open for the world to see, it often doesn?t take long for some nefarious coder to find and exploit a security hole. Keeping everything up-to-date helps keep your site safe.
    • Delete unused plugins - I often install two or three plugins for a specific feature ? such as SEO, social sharing or contact forms ? before I settle on one I plan to use. Simply deactivating the plugins you?re not using isn?t enough ? the code is still on your server and, if it has some weakness in it, can be exploited. Make sure you hit the ?Delete? link on these plugins to remove them from your server completely.
    • Never use the ?admin? account to create content ? WordPress and its plugins are only one point of possible infection. The computer and browser you use to access them can also be a weakness. Some pieces of malware sniff for passwords and then share them with other bad guys in the Internet. Since the ?admin? account on WordPress has access to the entire install, having that password get out could be disastrous. To limit the risk, set up a separate user with the ?Editor? or ?Author? role in your WordPress installation and only use that account when you?re creating new blog posts or commenting. You should only use the ?admin? account when you?re performing administrative functions.
    • Keep your antivirus software up-to-date and scan your computer frequently - If you don?t currently have antivirus software installed on your computer (i.e., Norton, Avast, Trend Micros, etc.), stop what you?re doing (ok, finish reading this post then do it) and get it installed immediately. And when your antivirus needs an update, allow it. Do a thorough scan of your machine at least once a month to keep it clean of the kind of malware that can open you to a whole variety of security issues.

It?s important to understand that nothing can guarantee 100% WordPress security. But, staying on top of software updates, changing your passwords frequently and limiting your risk to exposure for a security breach can get you more than 98% of the way there.

Bellator?s Rick Hawn says sponsor stopped check after loss to Michael Chandler

Bellator's Rick Hawn lost to Michael Chandler last Thursday in a title fight. Hawn, an Olympian in judo, was submitted in the second round. The fight was a part of Bellator's first broadcast on Spike, and was viewed by just under a million viewers.

Still, Hawn says one of his sponsors wasn't happy his performance, and stopped his check.

So one of my main sponsors from my fight canceled his check cuz he wasnt happy with the outcome or my performance. Read his explanations below.

"At this point, a stop payment has been placed on check which cannot be cashed or deposited now"

"I will not comment on Rick and his fight. That is not my place. But what I will tell you is this: I took a huge chance with him. TV exposure was great?but it only holds weight if he wins or puts on a good show. Neither happened. At the end of the day?not one sole (sp) will run to [my] store and buy product because they [saw my logo and saw] Rick loose (sp) the fight. I've made it my career and business to know what nets a return on investment for the brand?and this is the number 1 reason why I DO NOT hand out money or product to fighters."

Its funny how all my pics wearing his product are still up on his company pages even after he says and does all this stuff!!

A lawsuit is pending so I cannot comment on who it is just yet but stay tuned.

This isn't a sponsor dropping a fighter after a bad performance or two. It's a sponsor making a deal to pay a fighter, and then breaking that deal.

When a sponsor signs on with a fighter, it's a risk. That fighter may lose. That fighter may get injured, or not perform the way you or your company want him to. But that's the risk you take when getting involved with MMA or any sport where companies sponsor individual athletes.

When Cain Velasquez's sponsors signed onto the UFC heavyweight champion's fight on Fox last November, they knew there was a chance he would be knocked out in the first round. They took that risk because the rewards of being associated with the champ are so great. Hawn's sponsor did the same.

Hawn's sponsor wants to have it both ways -- get the glory of working with a winner without the risk of having a loser on their payroll. It doesn't work that way. Hopefully, Hawn's lawsuit will expose the business for being so low.

    Thanks, Bloody Elbow.
