Better economy, more jobs means more riders on the bus

King County Metro is experiencing its second highest ridership year and is closing in on a new record as demand for transit continues to strengthen along with the local economy and job market.

Preliminary data shows that Metro has delivered nearly 400,000 transit rides each weekday so far in 2013, hitting the second highest average weekday ridership ever in May at 408,000 rides ? numbers not seen since 2008, before the recession and rising unemployment. Demand for bus service continues to grow despite a 5 percent drop in gas prices and elimination of the downtown Seattle Ride Free Area. These numbers suggest more people are relying on Metro as they re-enter the local job market.

While transit demand is up across the county, Eastside ridership appears particularly strong. Metro is seeing double-digit growth on Eastside routes such as the 221 between Redmond and Eastgate, 226 serving downtown Bellevue and Eastgate, 234 between Kenmore and Bellevue, and the 245 serving Bellevue, Kirkland and Factoria.

?This preliminary ridership data shows we?re poised to achieve a third straight year of ridership growth as our economy continues to strengthen,? said Metro General Manager Kevin Desmond. ?Instead of gearing up to meet this growing demand as it should be, Metro is preparing to dramatically cut service if a transportation funding package is not approved by the state Legislature.?

Other emerging trends point to growing demand.

Metro?s four RapidRide routes also continue to grow. The A, B, C and D lines have seen a combined 30 percent increase in ridership compared to the bus routes they replaced. These trends are moving Metro ever closer to the record 119 million trips it delivered in 2008, prior to the recession.

Park-and-ride usage is also up and has surpassed levels not seen since the recession, with demand strongest among suburban commuters, especially on the Eastside.

This snapshot of Metro ridership comes as it begins planning for a 17 percent reduction in bus service if the state Legislature fails to authorize funding to fill the agency?s projected $75 million annual budget gap. Sixty-five routes are at risk of being canceled, and service reduced on another 86 routes without a permanent and sustainable source of revenue.

riders directed to ORCA cards

Metro will discontinue the sale of ticket books and gift certificates, and will no longer provide information at 624-PASS. However, all ticket books and gift certificates sold before July 1 will be valid until used.

The ORCA card and cash will eventually become Metro?s only payment options. ORCA cards can be purchased and re-loaded with additional value at ticket vending machines on the mezzanine or plaza level of each downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel station, at Sound Transit Link and Sounder Stations, and at the Bellevue transit center.

Again this year, ?Bicycles for Humanity Seattle? (B4HS) will be collecting good, used bikes at Summer Celebration!

Last year, Islanders donated 55 bikes during the two-day festival by dropping the bikes off at the Bicycles for Humanity booth.

Bicycles for Humanity, Seattle (B4HS) is dedicated to shipping thousands of bicycles to South Africa every year to help poor and impoverished villagers improve their lives with transportation. Since 2010, BFHS has collected and sent over 2,500 bicycles to Kwa Zulu Natal, SA from the Puget Sound region.

Why are bikes so important in South Africa? There is very little modern transportation as we know it. Bicycles can help health care workers reach distant villages that have no medical facilities. Because the high incidence of HIV has caused the orphan population to literally explode, donated bicycles can help South African children travel miles to school where a hot lunch ? possibly the only full meal of the day ? and an education await. And, in an area where one out of every two people is unemployed, bikes can also help villagers get to work or start a small business.

Park-and-ride usage, and transit ridership? are closely tied to economic growth.

Several Eastside lots continue to operate at or above capacity, including South Bellevue (107%), Bear Creek (110%), Redmond (100%) and South Kirkland (104%).

Android phones are helping New York City cops fight crime

The New York Police Department has secretly equipped officers with a new weapon to help them fight crime. Roughly 400 Android smartphones have been distributed to officers since last summer as part of a pilot program taking place in New York City, The New York Times reported. The phones are unable to make or receive calls and instead use a data connection to gain access to an individual?s arrest files. An application on the device can look up a person?s criminal history, verify his or her identity with a police photograph and even display information from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

By typing in an address into the application, an officer will be able to see the names of every resident with an arrest warrant, any registered gun owners, previous police summons and specific information about earlier disputes.

?You can see that in this one 14-story building there are thousands and thousands of records,? Officer Tom Donaldson said to the Times while on patrol in Harlem. ?If I see that in the last month, there have been six arrests on the seventh floor for drug trafficking, maybe I want to hang out on the seventh floor for a while.?

The new technology does have its critics, though.

The executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, Donna Lieberman, believes the application has ?enormous promise to improve policing and public safety,? however she is worried that it could ?become a vehicle to round-up the usual suspects, to harass people? based on previous information in the police databases.

Canadian writer-director Kim Nguyen spent nearly a decade researching this docudrama about child soldiers in Africa, and the film feels as authoritative as a first-hand account.

A haunting take on unspeakably grim subject matter, shot on location in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A powerful and upsetting portrait of a young girl compelled into unimaginably horrific circumstances.

Nguyen, astonishingly, manages to wring something vaguely like a happy ending from this tragic story.

War Witch is most effective not when we are looking in on Komona but when we are inside her head.

The powerful things we expect from "War Witch" are as advertised, but what we don't expect is even better.

You're likely to ponder its images, its insights into a very foreign (for most of us) location and the tragic situation of Komona (and others like her) for a long time to come.

Is it accurate depiction of Africa's child soldiers? I don't know, thank God. But it feels authentic to its very core, and that makes it as hard to forget as it is to ignore.

Brutal without turning exploitative, the result is harrowing and heartbreaking.

Nguyen creates a mesmerizing tone through his camerawork, editing, sound and the infusion of African folk imagery and ritual, but it's Mwanza's performance as Komona that makes "War Witch" feel so miraculous.

Nguyen reportedly worked on "War Witch" for a decade, and it shows in both the immediacy and authenticity of his tale, and the meticulous craft with which it's told.

Made with extremely clear-eyed restraint from harangues, sentiment, message-mongering, or anything else that would cheapen its central character's suffering and fight.

War Witch features a standout performance by Rachel Mwanza, but the supernatural visions don't really suit the film's tone and mood.

Nguyen's compassion and commitment to the issue is admirable, and at its best, War Witch is devastating.

War Witch is remarkable for the fact that it never strays into sentimentality or sensationalism.

...a love story between youngsters who are forced to become adults all too early in their lives.

This is a straight ahead essay on warfare at its worst and the survival of the human spirit at its best.

An astonishing drama set in Africa that vividly depicts the courage and resiliency of a 12-year-old girl whose spiritual gifts enable her to survive.

It is astonishing that film that contains such violence can have such a serene tone. The source of the serenity is the measured, calm narration by Komona (voice of Diane Umawahoro) that is the telling of her story to her unborn child

An exquisitely made film in direct contrast to the ugliness of its subject matter

The portrait of a girl who retains her dignity and strength, her faith in the future, in the face of unimaginable horrors. It's inspirational in a very real way.

UNC responds to special ed teacher shortage | EdNewsColorado

The University of Northern Colorado?s School of Special Education got props recently for preparing ?high-quality special educators in significant numbers? in a study conducted by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

In the report, ?The Changing Teacher Preparation Profession,? the association credits UNC for responding to the high-need field through recruitment strategies, ?including strong relationships with area school districts, and for providing ?ample support? for teacher candidate throughout the program.

?One way the school has strengthened the support it provides candidates is through its use of an ?early warning system? to identify early on those teacher candidates struggling in the program and to develop professional improvement plans to support them,? the report says.

The note on UNC appears in the report?s findings that ?teacher production shortages persist in key areas? ? specifically, English language acquisition, mathematics, science and special education. However, the association has tips for improvement for UNC as well. They include:

• Better alignment between teacher production and workforce needs; and
• Improving induction programs and working conditions to ensure that highly trained professionals remain the teaching field.

'Artificial leaf' gains the ability to self-heal damage and produce energy from dirty water

Apr. 8, 2013 ? Another innovative feature has been added to the world's first practical "artificial leaf," making the device even more suitable for providing people in developing countries and remote areas with electricity, scientists reported in New Orleans on April 8. It gives the leaf the ability to self-heal damage that occurs during production of energy.

Daniel G. Nocera, Ph.D., described the advance during the "Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture" at the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society.

Nocera, leader of the research team, explained that the "leaf" mimics the ability of real leaves to produce energy from sunlight and water. The device, however, actually is a simple catalyst-coated wafer of silicon, rather than a complicated reproduction of the photosynthesis mechanism in real leaves. Dropped into a jar of water and exposed to sunlight, catalysts in the device break water down into its components, hydrogen and oxygen. Those gases bubble up and can be collected and used as fuel to produce electricity in fuel cells.

"Surprisingly, some of the catalysts we've developed for use in the artificial leaf device actually heal themselves," Nocera said. "They are a kind of 'living catalyst.' This is an important innovation that eases one of the concerns about initial use of the leaf in developing countries and other remote areas."

Nocera, who is the Patterson Rockwood Professor of Energy at Harvard University, explained that the artificial leaf likely would find its first uses in providing "personalized" electricity to individual homes in areas that lack traditional electric power generating stations and electric transmission lines. Less than one quart of drinking water, for instance, would be enough to provide about 100 watts of electricity 24 hours a day. Earlier versions of the leaf required pure water, because bacteria eventually formed biofilms on the leaf's surface, shutting down production.

"Self-healing enables the artificial leaf to run on the impure, bacteria-contaminated water found in nature," Nocera said. "We figured out a way to tweak the conditions so that part of the catalyst falls apart, denying bacteria the smooth surface needed to form a biofilm. Then the catalyst can heal and re-assemble."

Nocera said that about 3 billion people today live in areas that lack access to traditional electric production and distribution systems. That population will grow by billions in the decades ahead. About 1 billion people in the developing world already lack reliable access to clean water. Thus, a clear need exists for a simple device like the artificial leaf that's compatible with local conditions.

"It's kind of like providing 'fast-food energy,'" he noted. "We're interested in making lots of inexpensive units that may not be the most efficient, but that get the job done. It's kind of like going from huge mainframe computers to a personal laptop. This is personalized energy."

Earlier devices used rare, costly metals and other materials, involved complicated wiring and were expensive to manufacture. But Nocera's artificial leaf uses less-expensive materials and incorporates a design -- a so-called "buried junction" -- that is simple and would be inexpensive to mass produce. And the leaf has advantages over solar panels, which are costly and produce energy only during daylight hours. The leaf's hydrogen and oxygen, in contrast, can be stored and used at night.

"A lot of people are designing complicated, expensive energy-producing devices, and it is difficult to see them being adopted on a large scale," he said. "Ours is simple, less expensive, and it works. And with that, I think we've changed the dialog in the field."

Among the team's priorities for further development of the device: integrating it with technology for converting the hydrogen into a liquid fuel that could run traditional portable electric generators or even cars.

Nocera acknowledged research funding from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.

2013 WWE Hall of Fame inductees react to epic Madison Square Garden enshrinement

NEW YORK CITY ? On the night before WrestleMania 29, where legacy is a prevailing theme, Superstars and Legends gathered in Madison Square Garden to watch the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2013 cement their own.

The WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony saw New York City sports-entertainment legends Bruno Sammartino and Bob Backlund come home, joined by Trish Stratus, Booker T, Mick Foley and millionaire mogul Donald Trump.

A visibly appreciative Sammartino was humbled by the rousing standing ovation he received at night?s end, as well as the chance to once again main-event inside the building that made him famous.

?I?m very grateful for the opportunity to appear in Madison Square Garden one more time,? he said. ?I headlined this building more times than anyone in history. To have the opportunity to come here one more time at this stage of my life is a thrill that will stay with me forever.?

The ceremonious evening kicked off with Mick Foley taking his place in WWE history. The Hardcore Legend was inducted by his close friend and former tag team partner, WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk.?

?Mick and I went down the road a lot when he first got into the profession,? Funk told WWE.com after his speech. ?I know he feels the same way about it as I do. He has a tremendous amount of respect for the business, as I do. That?s our real connection.?

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) ? Guan Tianlang is in good company this week at Augusta National.

He played a practice round Monday with two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw, then headed out in the afternoon with Tiger Woods. He has a game lined up Tuesday with Tom Watson, an eight-time major champion. On Wednesday, he plans to play the Par 3 Tournament with Nick Faldo, winner of six majors.

Can't he play with someone his own age?

Not at this Masters.

Guan is the 14-year-old from China, the youngest to ever play in the Masters and the youngest player at any major in 148 years. He qualified by winning the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship last fall in Thailand, and now he gets a crack at the best in the game, on one of the most famous golf courses in the world.

Nerves? So far, only a big smile.

"I'm really excited in the morning when I come out on the course and there's many people here," Guan said Monday, conducting his news conference in English with a Chinese translator at his side in case he needed help. He rarely did.

The kid has shown to be special in many ways.

He went wire-to-wire in the Asia Pacific amateur, and he wasn't even rattled on the final hole at Amata Spring Country Club. With a belly putter he had been using for about six months, he calmly rapped in a 5-foot par putt for the one-shot win and a drive down Magnolia Lane ? in the passenger seat, of course.

Age seems to have no limits these days in golf.

Tiger Woods was 21 when he set 20 records to win the 1997 Masters. Sergio Garcia was 19 when he nearly beat Woods in the PGA Championship two years later. Morgan Pressel was 18 when she won a major championship on the LPGA Tour. Lydia Ko was 15 when she won the Women's Canadian Open last year on the LPGA Tour.

Even so, this is the Masters.

Guan is 14, the only player in the field who brought his eighth-grade homework with him to Augusta National.

"I knew he was young," Steve Stricker said Monday. "I didn't know he was the same age as my daughter. Yeah, that's remarkable. And I've been telling my daughter the same with this Lydia Ko, who has been playing on the LPGA Tour. I just can't imagine being that young and competing at this level at such an early age. It will be interesting. I'll be interested to see how he does and how he handles it and how he plays. It's remarkable that he's even playing."

The only player younger than Guan in a major championship was Young Tom Morris, who was about a month younger in the 1865 British Open.

He arrived a few weeks ago and can't get enough of Augusta. Guan figures he already has played six rounds, and he was with a member the day he shot 69. Whether that translates in the tournament is another story.

Guan played in the Australian Open in December and opened with an 82 at The Lakes in Sydney. He bounced back with a 70 the next day, though the first-round score was enough to imagine what kind of number waits on the 7,445-yard course at Augusta National, where just getting to the slick, contoured putting surfaces is part of the challenge.

"I would say I'm not long enough, but I think I'm still all right in this golf course," Guan said. "And I drive a little bit longer in Thailand than here, but I think I'm still all right, not a really serious problem."

At least he's finding the right kind of help.

A friend at his home course in China knows Crenshaw and passed along the message that the kid wanted to play a practice round with him. Crenshaw gladly obliged, and was impressed with what he saw. Guan did not go wire-to-wire in Thailand on accident.

Crenshaw studied his touch, balance and rhythm, and he tried to show him the nuances of the slopes on the greens.

"It was fascinating to see," Crenshaw said.

Guan planned to stay in the Crow's Nest on Monday night, the tiny quarters set aside for the six amateurs in the field this week. He has been spending long days at Augusta in the week leading to the Masters, not leaving until twilight on Saturday.

And he was back on the course Sunday, playing nine holes and heading to the practice round. He was startled by a familiar voice.

"There he is!" Watson bellowed in his direction. After a hearty handshake, Watson said to him, "Working hard?"

Guan nodded.

"GOOD!" Watson replied, flashing his gap-tooth grin.

The 30,000 fans on the course Monday didn't seem to bother Guan on the first official day of practice. Woods played 14 holes on Sunday with Stricker, and then returned Monday afternoon to play with Dustin Johnson, with Guan tagging along.

"It's frightening to think that he was born after I won my first Masters," Woods said two weeks ago at Bay Hill.

This is not the first time Woods has seen the Chinese teenager. He was at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai a few years ago, and during the pro-am Guan was in a group of juniors who played with Woods on the par-3 17th hole. Woods stood to the side amazed, not only at such a polished swing, but the composure playing before a thousand people.

Guan has been looking up to Woods since he was 3 or 4 years old, and "it's pretty exciting to watch him."

"I played with him twice in the past couple years, and he gives me many advice and I will say every time I play with him, I feel a lot better and give myself some confidence and it's very good," Guan said.

Nicolas Colsaerts is making his Masters debut. The Belgian, however, has the experience of playing major championships and a Ryder Cup last year. Plus, he's 30.

"I don't think I would have handled it," Colsaerts said. "You know, 14, we're all busy already playing a lot of good golf, but to play Augusta at 14, I think everybody is almost in shock. I hope for him he's going to enjoy this week as much as I am. I almost feel like I should be considered the same way because this place needs to be treated more as a rookie thing. But, yeah, it's quite an achievement to get to play Augusta and the Masters at 14 years old."

There was one question in Chinese, and Guan slowly shook his head waiting for the reporter to finish. As the center of attention this week, the reporter was curious if Guan would feel embarrassed if he plays poorly.

For Guan, it's more about the experience than the score.

"As I say, I'm not going to push myself too hard, and I'm trying to just enjoy my game, play my best, and hopefully play some good score," he said.

Red Motion mount eliminates shutter judder, we go eyes-on (video)

Red announced its new Motion lens mount prior to opening its booth at NAB, and now we've had a chance to see this guy in action. The mount, which is compatible with the company's Epic and Scarlet cameras, is meant to fix the CMOS rolling shutter problem. The Motion includes a liquid crystal shutter that's placed in front of the main sensor and is timed to engage when the sensor is fully open. It also adds up to 8x neutral density, which can be enabled electronically through the camera UI with 1/100-stop precision. In a demo at Red's NAB booth, the camera captured every flash of a strobe -- without the new mount, some flashes would likely slip through the cracks. It's set to ship for $4,500 in the fall (or possibly this summer), and will be available with Canon EF or PL mounts. You can see it in action today in the hands-on demo after the break.

5 killed in Muslim-Christian clashes in Egypt

CAIRO (AP) ? Clashes between Egyptian Muslims and Christians erupted early Saturday in a town near Cairo, leaving at least five people dead, security officials said.

Investigators said they were waiting for autopsy reports to confirm how the men ? four Christians and a Muslim ? were killed in the small town of Khosoos, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the capital.

President Mohammed Morsi's office released a statement condemning the violence and "any actions aimed at disrupting unity and cohesion of Egyptian society."

Christian-Muslim tensions flared under the former regime of Hosni Mubarak, and a bomb killed Coptic worshippers just weeks before the 2011 uprising against his rule broke out. In the absence of a strong police force since the revolt, attacks have become more frequent.

Police said the clashes started when young Muslims drew inflammatory symbols on an Islamic institute and a local mosque. Christian onlookers and Muslims nearby began quarrelling and soon residents wielding guns began firing on one another.

Residents interviewed by The Associated Press, however, offered different accounts of what sparked the violence, and said police arrived hours after the fight ended. Some residents said violence was begun by feuding families. Others said the fight began after a woman was verbally harassed in the street.

The varying accounts could not be immediately reconciled.

The clashes also started a fire near a church, which is now closed and guarded by armored police vehicles. Broken glass from smashed shop windows littered the street, where the hulks of several burnt out cars stood.

"Police fired tear gas and we all left," said 36 year-old Atef Atta, a Christian resident. "Christians are always victims and the government doesn't do anything."

Egypt's Coptic Christians, who make up about 10 percent of the country's 85 million people, have long complained of discrimination by the state. They are the largest Christian community in the Middle East.

The president's Muslim Brotherhood group condemned the sectarian violence.

"Security authorities should take all measures to resolve the problem and religious figures should intervene to end the tension," Freedom and Justice Party Chairman Saad el-Katatni said in a statement emailed to reporters.

Church officials in the neighborhood where the fighting took place could not be immediately reached for comment.

Egyptian Christians fear that lack of security and political tension, along with incendiary statements by some ultraconservative Islamic clerics might give extremists a freer hand to attack churches and Coptic property, especially in the country's poorer areas.

Brendon Ayanbadejo wants to make it clear, he?s as big a proponent of the Ravens as he is gay marriage.

While his earlier remarks gave the clear impression he thought his release was in part because of his outspoken advocacy, Ayanbadejo has circled back to say he doesn?t think that?s why the Ravens released him.

Ayanbadjeo told Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun Friday morning that he understands and accepts the Ravens decision.

?The Ravens have been backing me, they knew my stance for years and have been facilitating me and organizing me with LGBT and set me up with Equality Maryland, they helped me,? Ayanbadejo said. ?If they didn?t like what I was doing, they would have cut me a long time ago. I?m a special-teams player and you can find somebody to do what I did for less than half that value. They can find someone to do the same job.?

Ayanbadejo was due to make $940,000 this year, and his point about economics is a valid one. Even the best special teamers are still just special teamers in the eyes of the accountants, and at a time when the Ravens were retooling their defense to get younger, players such as Ed Reed, Bernard Pollard and others weren?t sacred, so why should a 36-year-old backup be?

But he also makes a valid point about the culture of a locker room. The nail that sticks up gets hammered down, and Ayanbadejo openly courted attention to himself to bring attention to his cause.

?No team wants any situation to be bigger than football,? he said. ?I think equality rights is inherently bigger than football, but, in no way, was I distraction for my team. It was a balancing act. I was there to play football. I was also there to promote positive issues, things bigger than football.

?The NFL doesn?t really want that. I was saying the NFL as a whole organization, not just the Ravens. The NFL isn?t talking about politics, immigration policies, war and AIDS. The NFL doesn?t touch those things.

?The NFL keeps it safe, talking about charities for kids and those less fortunate, cancer, stuff like that. I was touching on issues bigger than football. I think the Ravens think I?m mad at them, but I?m absolutely not. I love the Ravens. When I say my bark was louder than my bite. I?m saying I?m not the player I once was and the Ravens did the right thing. They were justified. I have no problem with them at all.?

He shouldn?t. Players such as Ayanbadejo gain a greater value to the team that knows them than to others. Most teams have a guy or two on the roster who hang on an extra few years because they?re smart and accountable and reliable. He was one of those guys for the Ravens.

And he wants to make sure he?s still considered a ?Raven for life,? regardless his first words which indicated a problem.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Viacom Inc's Paramount Pictures said on Tuesday it reached a deal with the government-run China Movie Channel and its online movie service partner, Jiaflix Enterprises, to produce "Transformers 4" in China. China Movie Channel said in the joint announcement that the deal marks the first time it will work with a western studio to produce a film in China, although other studios such as Walt Disney Co have entered deals with other parties to produce films there to tap the booming Chinese box office.

New measurement of crocodilian nerves could help scientists understand ancient animals

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Crocodilians have nerves on their faces that are so sensitive, they can detect a change in a pond when a single drop hits the water surface several feet away. Alligators and crocodiles use these "invisible whiskers" to detect prey when hunting. Now, a new study from the University of Missouri has measured the nerves responsible for this function, which will help biologists understand how today's animals, as well as dinosaurs and crocodiles that lived millions of years ago, interact with the environment around them.

"The trigeminal nerve is the nerve responsible for detection of sensations of the face," said Casey Holliday, assistant professor of anatomy in the MU School of Medicine. "While we've known about these sensitive nerves in crocodiles, we've never measured the size of the nerve bundle, or ganglion, in their skulls, until now. When compared to humans, this trigeminal nerve in crocodiles is huge."

The key to this measurement is a specific hole in the skull. The trigeminal nerve is rooted inside the skull, but must travel through a large hole before it branches out to reach the crocodile's skin on its face. By examining how the skull size, brain size and ganglion size relate to each other, scientists can estimate how sensitive the face is. Eventually, Holliday hopes to measure this nerve in other ancient and contemporary species to learn more about animal behavior.

"Currently, we rely on alligators, crocodiles and birds to provide us with information about how ancient reptiles, such as pre-historic crocodiles and dinosaurs, functioned," said Holliday, who co-authored the study with doctoral student Ian George. "However, the first thing we have to do is to understand how the living animals function."

When comparing the size of the hole for the trigeminal nerve found in alligators to that of certain dinosaurs, George says that the hole in the much-larger dinosaur skull is very similar in size or even smaller, which could give scientists more information about how well dinosaurs could detect small sensations on the face. From there, the scientists can start to trace the evolution of this nerve and the mechanism used by crocodiles.

"Some species of ancient crocodiles lived on land and they probably wouldn't have a use for a sensitive face that can detect disturbances in the water," George said. "So our next step is to trace back and determine when the nerve got bigger and see how that might have paralleled the animals' ecology."

Holliday says that this information will aid future research, including when his team will examine skulls of ancient crocodiles. Understanding this nerve and its functions could also lead to better understanding of the anatomical basis for behavior in many living animals, including fish, electric eels, platypi and humans.

"The same way that we would look at the size of the visual cortex in the brain to understand how well an animal might see, we can now look at the trigeminal nerve in animals to determine how sensitive their skin on their faces is," Holliday said.
