Swaziland a gap year destination in southern Africa

Swaziland a gap year destination in southern Africa

For people looking to undertake a gap year a little off the beaten track, the Kingdom of Swaziland in southern Africa could be one exciting option.

Bordered on three sides by South Africa and by Mozambique in the east, the tiny landlocked country is characterised by a variety of different landscapes.

As well as mountainous regions, there are savannas in the east and rainforest in the north-west. The Great Usuthu River is one of a number to run through the country, helping support agriculture.

A member of the British Commonwealth, Swaziland is one of a handful of nations still governed by the reigning monarch, with King Mswati III serving as the head of state and government.

The first language is the Bantu language of SiSwati, however English is also widely spoken throughout the country - ideal for British gappers seeking voluntary work abroad or a gap year adventure.

Mbabane, the capital, is located in the western uplands, while Manzini, the principal commercial and industrial city, is situated 500m lower in the Middleveld.

A number of Year Out Group members organise gap year programs in Swaziland, including GVI, Frontier Conservation, Real Gap Experience, Projects Abroad and WAVA.
