Your 2013 Plan: Twelve Months of Mental and Physical ...

By Pamela Peeke, MD

Happy New Year to every WebMD member! Take a breath and hit the pause button. Let?s talk about how you want to live from here on out. If you believe you?re doing well? eating nutritiously, staying mentally and physically active? then keep it going, and try to continuously challenge yourself to stay engaged and on track. And share your thoughts on this blog and exchanges to help others. However, if you feel like making some improvements to boost your health and wellbeing, I?m going to roll out a simple, practical strategy to teach you healthy lifestyle basics while showing you how to coach yourself to sustain your success for a lifetime. You see, you have what it takes to help yourself. You just need to discover how powerful you really are.

I prefer to approach lifestyle as an ongoing, dynamic, holistic and integrative process. You?re not a robot that can be commanded to get up and exercise and eat well right away. You?re a human being who?s come to the table with a lifetime of triumphs and difficulties and you need to be honored for your uniqueness. As you look ahead at this new year, let?s think way outside any box, and instead be mavericks in how to craft a better way to live. You?ll notice I?m not emphasizing a 12 month weight loss campaign. This is much bigger. This is about a mind and body transformation that is sustainable for life? your life. Transformation is the goal.

For the next twelve months, you?ll be provided with a multilevel blueprint to help you navigate your mental and physical challenges. This will include:

Twice weekly blogs: You?ll be hearing wit and wisdom from the ?Masters?, men and women who have achieved mental and physical transformations and are eager to share secrets of their ongoing journeys and success. In this blog you?ll hear from Tara Costa, well known from her Biggest Loser story and author of the foreword to my book The Hunger Fix. We welcome your comments on the blog and plan to reply to as many of one of you as we can.

Diet Community Exchange: Join the WebMD Diet Community Exchange and reach out to get support from other WebMD members who are at various stages of their transformation journeys. I?ll be there as well to answer questions, post tips and resources and participate in the discussion groups. Research now shows that when you can get ongoing support and coaching like this, you?ll be more successful in the long run.

Weight Loss Wisdom Newsletter: Sign up for the WebMD Weight Loss Wisdom Newsletter. You?ll see snippets from my blogs and the diet exchange interwoven into helpful new news to guide you on your journey. The wonderful editors do a terrific job of filtering through all of the new information coming in to drill down to the most helpful facts, tips and tools to arm you for your daily lifestyle challenges.

OK, are you ready to get started? Great. First, take my Are You Ready for Change quiz. It?ll help you get the reality check you need prior to embarking on your journey. This is meant primarily to help you start to think about the things you?ll need to change as you push forward. You?ll be addressing each of these on an ongoing basis so don?t worry about anything other than being aware that these are important issues.

1. Are you motivated to make long-term lifestyle changes that require eating healthy foods and becoming more physically active?

2. Have you fully identified the main stresses?in your life now and during the next several months?

3. Do you truly believe that there is no magic bullet, but instead patient work on your part?

4. Do you believe that you can change your eating habits?

5. Do you have family, friends, or both who will support your weight-loss efforts?

6. Are you willing to find ways to be more physically active?

7. Are you realistic about your mental and physical transformation goal?

8. Are you willing to record your food intake, physical activity, and mental focus, and will you make time to do so?

9. Are you willing to look at past experiences in starting a healthier lifestyle and other areas of your life to see what has motivated you and kept you working on obstacles to success?

10. Do you view changing your eating and physical activity habits as a positive experience?

11. Have you resolved, or are you in the process of resolving, any eating disorders or other emotional issues that make it difficult for you to achieve a healthy weight?

12. Do you believe that achieving your mental? and physical transformation is a lifelong process that requires you to change your behavior, eating habits, and level of physical activity?

13. Are you ready to make that commitment?

There?s no right or wrong answer to this quiz. It?s an opportunity for you to review where you stand in your determination and ability to make changes in your life. Carefully examine the people, places and things in your life that may stand in your way to successful transformation. We?ll help coach you to how to adapt and adjust as you go along.

As many of you know, my baseline blueprint for change is using my infamous MIND MOUTH MUSCLE template. Let?s dig in with small steps in each element.

MIND:
We?re not doing any resolutions. We?re taking small steps to build a powerful foundation for lifelong health and wellbeing. Don?t stress yourself with lofty goals. Instead, practice staying mindful and vigilant for only TWENTY FOUR HOURS. That?s correct. Get through each day using my ?Just for Today I Can_____?. Break up the day into segments highlighting the trouble hours (nightly eating, overeating in the afternoon, skipping lunch) and concentrate on your significant changes occurring during those blocks.

MOUTH:
I highly encourage you to log onto the WebMD Food and Fitness Planner. You need to have a basic plan to use and customize for your own needs. In future blogs, I?ll be talking about many of the new apps available and many resources to help you individualize your nutrition as you go along. For now, go to your kitchen and ditch any processed or refined food products lurking in your pantry and fridge. Give?em away or pitch them. Now, get to the grocery store and, using the Food and Fitness Planner?s guidelines, as well as my basic ?how to prepare your kitchen for healthy eating? in The Hunger Fix, gradually stock up on whole foods. Vow ?no more science fair projects in my kitchen!?

MUSCLE:
Assume the vertical more often each day. Just get up and move more. Walk for 30 minutes accrued at least 5 days every week. Add a little intensity by varying the speed or incline as you go along. Just take it gradually if you?ve been pretty sedentary. Grab a pedometer. Your eventual goal is 10,000 steps every day that you can. For now, just see what your start number is and plan on adding 500 or more steps per day every week until you hit your goal.

Finally, let?s end with the Voice of a Master.

?I didn?t become 316 pounds overnight. Packing on the pounds was a process, one that, at times, I don?t want to remember. But finally facing what got me there is what has helped me realize that I never want to be like that again?lost, dissociated from myself, and hungering for the lies and the quick fix of my food addiction. I?m an emotional eater. Whether I was sad or extremely happy, it didn?t matter?every emotion was registered as ?hunger? and filled with food. And the fact that most of my family has weight issues, and the majority of them are still obese, certainly didn?t help. Sunday dinners at Grandma?s house had four courses! There was no getting up in the morning to take a walk. We were clued out. Most of us do not understand that once we identify our true hunger, we can set the scope of our dreams?that no matter how powerful the influences are, we do not have to be trapped by our environments.? Tara Costa

Good luck and I look forward to hearing from you

During an oddly jokey statement at the White House as the fiscal deadline bore down Monday afternoon, President Obama said, "I'm going to be president for the next four years. I?hope." He was warning Republicans that, yes, they'd have to deal with him for a while. But it was, to be sure, a strange moment. Could he actually have been joking about assassination? About impeachment? The?apocalypse? Or has everyone just had enough of these negotiations??

Experiencing Thai cuisine at Benjarong, Bangalore | Thota's Blog

Posted in Food, Restaurant Reviews, Reviews at 11:05 pm by dhempe

I always wanted to visit the exclusive Thai restaurant Benjarong in Bangalore. I had heard some really good reviews about the place and as I had got addicted to Thai food when I went to Thailand for my honeymoon, I wanted to check out Benjarong soon. So it was great to get a chance to review the food at Benjarong as part of the burrp Chef?s Table presented by Yes Bank in association with VH1. It was meant to be an evening in the company of Chefs, some great food and like-minded foodies.

Benjarong restaurant with the tagline ?The lingering taste of Thailand? was very inviting and decked up for a special event with the bloggers and a food festival happening there too. It is located on Ulsoor road which is parallel to MG road near Trinity circle.

If you are wondering what Benjarong means, it literally means ?Five Colors? and is very similar to the Hindi word for the same ?Panch Rang?! In this particular context, it means the unique kind of Thai porcelain which is renowned for its intricate and exquisitely executed patterns. Read on to find out more about Benjarong!

Benjarong was nicely decked up for the ?Loi Krathong? festival which literally means the ?Festival of Lights?. This is similar to our Diwali festival and was from 26th November 2012 to 9th December 2012. Soon it was time to indulge in a splendid range of Thai delicacies and be overwhelmed by the experience!

Our welcome drink at the Chef?s table was the Siam sparkle which was a sweet drink but had flavors of ginger and chillies. It was a nice drink to refresh us after a long day at work and prepare our palate for the Thai food feast that lay ahead of us!

First starter we tried was the Miang Kham which is a traditional snack from Thailand and Laos. It means ?eating many things in one bite?. It has many flavors like ginger, lemon, chillies, peanuts and onions. It is similar to Paan that we have in India but is an appetizer and the burst of flavors in your mouth is amazing!

Next on the list of appetizers were Grathong thong je and Tod mun pla. Grathong thong je was water chestnuts, mixed peppers, corn and peas with minced chicken tossed in a delicate sauce served in rice tartlets. Tod mun pla were Thai fish cakes served with cucumber and peanut relish. There was also Salad in form of Larb Gai which is minced chicken salad with mint and makrut leaves in a spicey dressing. These appetizers were relished by us and we asked for a second helping to enjoy the wonderful taste!

If you thought only non-vegetarians had access to the best food at Benjarong, you are mistaken! Even the vegetarians were spoilt for a choice as they enjoyed not just Grathong thong je for appetizers, but also Tung Tong which was crispy fried golden bags with water chestnut filling. These were really yummy and even non-vegetarians asked for multiple servings of this!

In the meanwhile as we waited for the main course to arrive, we had a glimpse of the different spices which are used in the Thai cooking at Benjarong. These are specially sourced from Thailand itself if they are not available in India. These included basil leaves, pepper, chillies among others. We were really fascinated to hear about the commitment to authentic Thai cooking which the chefs at Benjarong have. They have made multiple trips to Thailand to learn the tricks of the trade and also adopted some of the home cooking from Thailand in their menus here which is not available anywhere in the world!

The non-vegetarians had a surprise in store for them as we got our soup in a very traditional Thai style which I had seen in Thailand where Thai curry is served in the same style too! We got the Tom Kati goong soup which is Thai coconut cream soup with prawn, lemon grass, galangal and kaffir lime leaves served in tender coconut shell! I loved this soup and it definitely was one of the best highlights of the day!

Main course for non-vegetarians was Pahd thai goong (wrapped in egg omelette) which is thai rice sticks cooked in a sweet and tangy sauce with prawns. I wasn?t really excited with this but what impressed me more was the Hormok Talay which was steamed seafood mousse ? I loved the delicate tastes in this! To wrap up the main course we had Gai tod nam prik pow which was chicken tossed in a roasted chilli paste.

After tasting such wonderful food, we were really full but the chefs at Benjarong told us to wait for the dessert which was a trio of surprise! We had Sakoo piak maprow on, which is Thai sago pudding with young coconut and corn along with Water chestnut in coconut milk and Lemon grass ice cream! To say I was pleasantly amazed would be an understatement!

I was blown away by this wonderful Dessert to complete an outstanding meal! This definitely was one of the best food experiences of all time. I was really thankful to Benjarong and Burrp for such a wonderful evening!

Swapnil Midha, Assistant Manager at Oriental Cuisines which manages Benjarong along with many other wonderful restaurants like Ente Keralam and The French Loaf took a bow for this wonderful feast along with the chefs of Benjarong who created a wonderful experience for us!

Must See HDTV December 31st January 6th

This week we say goodbye to 2012, and after the New Year's Eve festivities tonight we welcome not only college football bowl games and pro football playoffs, but also the return of many of our regularly scheduled TV shows. EHD podcast fave Justified also makes an appearance this week as seaosn three comes to Blu-ray. Portlandia fans should be ready to put a bird on it, and all those who've remained Downton Abbey spoiler free can check out the series' return Sunday night. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Looper
This time travel flick stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis playing a hitman that suddenly has the inconvenience of having both his present and future self existing at once, to the dismay of his employers. As with all movies that put time travel at their center it quickly gets more complicated, but there are some decent special effects scenes that make it well worth checking out in HD.
($19.99 on Amazon)

College Football
Bowls and bowls and bowls. While we're still awaiting the championship game, there are several big time games scattered throughout the week, plus a bevy of smaller bowls to keep things interesting. Check after the break for the dates, times and teams, and don't skip over the college football championship that will be played this week as Sam Houston State and North Dakota State vie for the FCS (aka DI-AA) crown

Over/Under
This USA show wasn't picked up for a series, but its two hour pilot will air Friday night. Its plot follows a fallen day trader / degenerate gambler that starts a high-end booking business. We highlight it because fans of Breaking Bad (and, we guess, Revolution, if it has fans) might want to check out Giancarlo Esposito popping up in a supporting role.
(USA, January 4th, 10PM)

Sean West: Why There's A 2-1 Chance That We ... - Business Insider

The Senate has wrapped up its session for the evening without a vote on the Fiscal Cliff.

It will reconvene at 11 AM tomorrow, just 13 hours before we hit the Fiscal Cliff, when taxes are scheduled to rise and spending cuts go into force.

It's up for debate, as to whether it really matters if we get a deal now or in early January, but for now, the question remains: Will we hit the Cliff or not.

Lately we've been closely following Eurasia Group analyst Sean West (find him here on Twitter) who has been "dovish" all along on the outcome of the talks.

We asked him after today's festivities whether he is still optimistic, and he says he is, and that he puts the odds of a deal at "2-1."

The key development today, says West, is that Senate leadership has brought other Senators into the fold:

I'm looking for a deal to be announced overnight or in the morning. ?Leadership has now brought all their members into the loop so they will have ownership and little reason to complain about swift Senate action. The House is more of a wildcard but I bet if the White House and Senate get a deal, The House will pass it and stop the fiscal cliff before it starts.

Why does this matter?

The caucus briefings today were an opportunity for rank and file Senators to be brought into the process and understand what each side had put on the table. It's no longer a secret one on one negotiation; some members might have had qualms about fast tracking the product of a totally private negotiation. Now swift passage of any deal will be easier, at least in the Senate.

And fundamentally, both sides really want a deal now:

Going through the deadline is bad for so many reasons that both parties want to avoid it. Today's scramble demonstrates the power of the deadline. ?Obama doesn't want to poison the well before his second term starts, and he doesn't want to risk being blamed for economic damage or actually triggering a recession. Republicans know they will get much of the blame and fewer concessions--like a lower tax threshold-- if they are viewed as causing a cliff crisis. And neither side truly believes a retroactive fix is that straightforward: there will be a new Congress, a sour political environment and no looming deadline to force action after the first of the year.

Ultimately he expects the tax threshold at $500K.
